I know that it's already a chore to keep up to date with your page as it is and now facebook is rolling out with yet another change, but this is not to confuse or make things harder for businesses. If you haven't changed or previewed the new layout for your page then you'll notice that you will be able to place a big image at the top of your brand page! Why is this going to be a good feature? When people are doing searches online most of the time we all get attracted to something that catches our eyes. Being able to have your customers personally ask you questions through your facebook can be a great way to either keep or attract their business! Danger! Annoying Water Spots

To an Automotive Detailer and the car enthusiast water spots are annoying! Not only does this look bad especially on those dark colored vehicles but this can become permanent if not taken care of. When water spots sit on the surface of a vehicle for an extended amount of time with out being treated can stain and it may be too late to correct it or get rid of them.

What happens is after the water dries it's the minerals in the water that can stain on the paint or even windows. Depending on where you are located the minerals in the water could be more harmful than other places but regardless of where you are these must be removed right away. The effect is a slow erosion of your car paint and scratching of window surfaces. When water evaporates it leaves the minerals picked up along the way. Surface tension causes the water to form into the smallest possible surface as droplets. The droplets then evaporate leaving what looks like spots on the hood of your car.

As a detailer this is where you come in to remove these properly. There's a couple different ways that you can do this. Some people will use products that may remove the spots but don't realize how it can actually be harmful to their vehicles. A popular method that most detailers will do is compound the areas where there are heavy water spots. There are also detailing chemicals out there that will specifically remove water spots. Now be sure to always follow up with a sealant or wax to put protectant over that surface after using a chemical or compound, even if compounded by hand.

Which Wash Mitt Do I Choose?

There are many ways, tools and products out there for automotive detailers and the car enthusiast to wash a vehicle. But one of the most important tools needed to was a car is a wash mitt. With many different types and brands of wash mitts out there it makes many people tend to wonder which one they should or which one is the best to use. That is a hard question to answer but here's some tips and information on a few different popular wash mitts to maybe help you to determine your decision.
A classic wash mitt to use that has been around for the longest time are the Lambs Wool/Sheepskin Wash Mitts. Great for soaking up the the soap and water and applying it on to the vehicle. This mitt is classic and many detailers still choose to use this mitt. They may be a classic design but still does a good job for washing a car.

A few years after the sheepskin mitts came the Micro Fiber Chenille Mitts. Covered in micro fiber chenille strands these mitts are softer and safer to use on the surface of your vehicle. Chenille refers to the construction of the strands; many fine microfiber threads are bunched together to create plush strands, like yarn but softer. There are many things that you can do or offer to protect and help restore the life to the exteriors of the vehicles. One tool that has been a great to use has been a Clay Bar. Removing Wheels and Seats Necessary?

Detail King has come across so many detailers who have certain ways of detailing. One question has been, "is it even necessary to remove car seats and rims to detail"? Well... here's the your answer. It's not really a question of it being necessary, it's more so a question of is this a type of niche that you would want to offer to your customers. Some Detailers have found that this works for them to attract customers. Some people will say "well that's just too time consuming..." agreed, but... that is where you would build that into your price.

Here are some pro's and con's to doing this.

Pro's: By removing these things this could make your detail a lot easier. With removing the seats you're able to clean the areas that you would not normally be able to reach with any tool or even by hand. Even underneath of the seat if you're that much of a perfectionist. Removing the wheels are the same thing. It will be a lot easier to clean the whole tire and even inside of the wheel/rim. You are able to maneuver the wheel around to whatever position you want to comfortably clean it.

Con's: Of course like mentioned above this can be time consuming, especially if you are a one man team. One of the biggest things is making sure that you are taking the time to put all these things back together properly and securely. If you miss completely tightening down all the lug nuts on a wheel or tighten all screws down on a seat can be very dangerous to your customer, which hopefully this would NEVER happen, but mistakes can happen. So by offering this you put more responsibility on yourself to be even more aware and cautious. Being careful of not striping any bolts or pulling out any cables that may be attached to some electric components in the seats. Obviously if you break it you pay for it.

There are many ways of looking at this these just being a couple. Point being here is, no it is not truly necessary for you move remove the seats or wheels but it's more of is this a niche that you can offer to attract customers like some other detailers do and seems to work!

If you decide that this is something that you do not want to take the time to do, then the thing that would definitely be necessary is to look into the proper tools and chemicals needed to be able clean those tough to reach areas. Now that is a must!

For You Hand Waxing Auto Detailers

All auto detailers have their own input and ways of doing certain details. One thing I've noticed is that some like to apply wax on to the surface of a vehicle by hand and others by an orbital (porter cable, cyclo, gem) or dual action polisher. By far using a polisher can save you lots of time and also lots of product. But there's no better judgment then the feel of your own hand.

For those of you who apply your products on by hand, what type of applicator do you use? Some auto detailers like to use a micro fiber towel or a micro fiber applicator. Well here's another solution for you to better work your product into the vehicle surface instead of just using a plain micro fiber material.

The CCS Euro Foam Applicators are great for doing some light paint correction by hand! Just like the foam pads for buffers and polishers these come in a variety of textures for either doing light swirl/scratch correction to polishing and sealing with these applicators. The pockets create spaces for excess polish to accumulate – without soaking into the foam – until it is needed on the work surface. Then the polish is drawn up through the center dimples of each CCS pocket and onto the applicator’s work surface. This design saves product because the CCS pockets significantly reduce product absorption.

How safe of a Auto Detailer are you? Detail King believes in taking all the proper safety procedures before starting a detail is the smartest thing you could do. Take a few mins first and look over the vehicle for any damage already on the vehicle or any areas/parts that you may think you should cover up. If there's areas of the paint that are cracking, bubbling up, rusting or chipping away then be sure to either what working around those areas. One safe way is marking around the area or masking it of with safe release painters tape (only if safe to do so with out pulling any paint off with the tape).

Taping off certain areas isn't just good for being safe it also can help you from getting any products like compound dust or glazes and waxes from getting in key wholes, vents, grills, etc. We all know how much of a pain compound dust can be sometimes especially if you're doing a lot of paint correction. So take a few mins to prep yourself before you get started and save yourself from having to either pay for the detail that "you're working on" or help save yourself some hassle of the cracks and crevices.

I know on those days off or even after work hours we want to keep our minds off of work, but sometimes keeping a look out for possible clientele is smart and will make you successful!

Keep in mind, try looking out for details that are "out of the ordinary". Be creative and keep an open mind out for things that could use a detail, even if it's a basic spray on wash and wax at first. These types of jobs could turn out to be great money makers! Examples: amusement parks, horse carriages, trollies, etc... Think outside the detail and you'll be successful!

Branding is every bit as important to a small auto detailing business as it is to a larger company like Detail King. Your Branding may be intentional or something that happens by accident. If you create a strong brand for your auto detailing business you should be able to achieve great things!

Every auto detailing business large or small needs to make short videos that actually show what you do! If you do not have a camcorder or if your phone does not have the capability to make videos then call the local high school or college. There are students that take courses on producing videos. They can make them for you complete with editing and be very reasonably priced with their fees. Or you can have photos taken with a digital camera and then use an online service like Animoto.com to create an awesome slide show video complete with effects, background music and captions.

Make short 2-3 minute videos of the various services that you offer. Establish your own YouTube channel where your videos can be made available for anyone to watch. YouTube allows you to "tag" your videos with keywords to help with SEO.

You also want to put your videos on your web site too. If you do not have any videos for your business you are truly missing the boat. YouTube is free to host them, you just need to take some time to get them made. Look into Animoto.com it would be well worth the investment and it does not cost you much at all to use. As you may know from attending one of Detail King’s auto detailing training seminars, Facebook has become a “must have” online networking tool for your detailing business. There are many features that Facebook offers to help car detailing businesses promote, sell, connect and market to their online community or even to local and current customers. A feature that not many detailing businesses take advantage of or maybe don’t think to use is the “Tag” option.

What the “tag” feature does is allows you to connect links, pictures, videos, wall posts to your Facebook friends or fans aka your detailing customers.

You may ask why or how could this be beneficial to my auto detailing business on Facebook? Well one great thing about Facebook is that everything that’s shared has its ways of connecting and spreading to others that you may not be connected with on your page or profile.

For example, say you posted a before and after pic of a customer’s car you recently detailed, simply “tag” them to the picture and that will show up on their profile page which will also allow those whom are friends with that person to see that picture which works its way back to you. That could lead to a sale or at least start to promote your auto detailing work and start to build a stronger following. The more you take advantage of these little marketing niches the greater the opportunity you create to gain more customers for your car detailing business.

So don’t just read about it, DO IT!
